How a Bijagós scenic flight works: what you need to know

A scenic flight over the Bijagós is one of those experiences that sound like luxury but cost the same as dinner at a good Bissau restaurant. Here's what to expect.

Before the flight You arrive at Bubaque airport 20 minutes early. Quick check-in with ID and PNR. Our pilot greets you, explains the route and the islands you'll see. 5-minute safety briefing.

The aircraft Cessna 210 Centurion — a light single-engine aircraft with 5 passenger seats. Small cabin but every seat has a panoramic window. There are no “worse” seats — visibility is 360°.

The 30-minute route Take-off from Bubaque heading north. First visual stop: Galinhas. Then Rubane to the west, with beaches that look painted. The pilot talks through the headset about each island and each bird colony we see.

The 60-minute route Same start but extending south to Orango. With luck you spot pods of sea hippos swimming. We continue to Caravela and Formosa — the deep archipelago. This is the route photographers fall for.

What to bring Camera (battery charged), sunglasses, cap if the sun is strong. The aircraft isn't pressurised so you can open the window. Travel light — every kilo counts.
