5 must-do things in Bubaque on your first visit

Landing in Bubaque for the first time feels like setting foot on another planet. The runway is 2 km from the centre, and the toca-toca (motorbike taxi) ride already gives you the measure of the place: no rush, no stress, no pedestrian crossings.

1. Bruce Beach at sunset 3 km north of the harbour, walking along the dirt track or by bike. Golden sand, leaning palm trees, fishermen coming home with the tide. Sunsets here are literally what you came to see.

2. Central market in the morning Fish just off the boat, mangoes, cashew, local rice, live chickens. Ask for the chato — a traditional indigo-blue fabric. Products from the mainland arrive on the fast boat on Tuesdays and Fridays.

3. Lookout Hill The only elevation on the island. A 30-minute easy walk from the centre. From the top you see Rubane to the south, Galinhas to the west, and on clear days even Orango. Take water and go before 10 a.m. (it gets hot).

4. Drum nights (Fridays) On the main square at dusk. Everyone welcome, but remember: it's a community ceremony, not a tourist show. Listen, dance if invited, never take photos without permission.

5. A day on Orango (optional but recommended) From Bubaque you can hire a speedboat to the National Park. Sea hippos, green turtles, untouched beaches. Minimum 6 h, guide required. Book ahead at the park office.

When to go November to May is the best season (dry season). December and January have the best visibility for scenic flights. Avoid June-September if you can.
